![]() Like Maslow said, if the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. It is interesting that Edison's preference for the cylinder sometimes led him to dead ends. Jenkins believed Edison favored the cylinder because he worked in shops that had rotary presses and lathes as a boy. The cylinder is prominent in Edison's sketches and appears to be the foundation of his creative process. He saw the things he wanted to invent in his mind's eye first. Edison portrayed himself as a tireless worker grinding away with experiments, but the sketches in his notebooks suggest he relied on visual play to start projects and solve problems. Reese Jenkins, a historian of technology, studied Edison's notebooks, correspondence, patent applications, memos, legal documents and photos of models. While his time cards reflected 110 hour work weeks, part of that time was spent napping on his lab table. After all, he is the guy that said creativity is 99% sweat. Sometimes, like Shannon, I feel like rooting for the machines.Įdison had a time clock in his lab to promote his reputation as a workaholic. My personal list ranks our dysfunctional Congress and unconventional President as a bigger threat than AI. It was first on The Washington Post list of threats to human civilization (February 2015). Mixed feelings about automation, robots and artificial intelligence are not new but it seems AI is now considered a serious contender in the list of possible extinction scenarios. We will be obsolete and, from the machine's point of view, unnecessary. Once artificial intelligence is released without restrictions, he believes it will quickly pass us and there will be no catching up. Musk worries that scientists are so fascinated by the technical challenges that they fail to see unintended consequences. Given his commitment to developing world changing technology, it is surprising he is so outspoken on the dangers of artificial intelligence. Musk is at the center of innovations such as PayPal, Tesla, and SpaceX. He thought a robot could eventually be President, but there probably wouldn't be a United States by the time technology reached that level.Įlon Musk seems to be at the other end of the spectrum on this subject. He replied, "I visualize a time when we will be to robots what dogs are to humans, and I'm rooting for the machines." He predicted that machines would be doing most things better than humans within a century or so. In the late 1980's, he was asked whether he was concerned that computers were becoming too clever. He juggled, rode a unicycle and collected early chess computers. In 1948 he published, "The Mathematical Theory of Communication." This formed the groundwork for information theory, which in turn launched the digital revolution. Claude Shannon is described as the father of information theory.
